THE WOMEN'S LITERACY PROJECT

The Women’s Literacy Project: Provides women ages 18-85 basic reading and writing fundamentals who were unable to complete primary and/or secondary education . The Womens's Adult Literacy project has served hundreds of women in the Makaoi and Makilu villages in the Machakos District of Kenya. The Project has been recognized and awarded by the Kenyan Government for achieving the highest test scores and largest Adult Literacy school enrollment in the Machakos District.
When the Women’s Adult Literacy Project began in 2001, twelve eager students traveled on foot, carrying broken pencils and torn fragments of paper because of the long awaited dream in their hearts. Two things inspired them, hope and change. The ability to read and write would open doors for them they previously thought impossible. They believed they would no longer be crippled by their lack of knowledge and looked forward to the day their children would have better opportunities to impact their society locally, regionally and nationally. The literacy classes grew from twelve students to three hundred in one village while the other flourished as well. The impact changed the region.
